Resin flooring: epoxy, PU and polyaspartic
Resin flooring is any floor laid as a liquid resin that cures hard on the slab. Epoxy is the most common and costs €30 to €120 a m². Polyurethane (PU) handles heat, steam and sunlight better, and polyaspartic cures in hours. Most good floors use two of them together.
Free, no obligation. One local installer prices it, not five.
The three resins side by side
| Compared | Epoxy | Polyurethane (PU) | Polyaspartic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bond to concrete | Excellent | Good, over a primer | Good, over a primer |
| Hardness | Very hard | Tough, a little flexible | Hard and tough |
| Sunlight | Can yellow | UV stable top coats | UV stable |
| Heat and steam | Softens | PU cement takes steam and boiling water | Good |
| Walk on it | About a day at 20°C | About a day | In 1 to 3 hours |
| Usual role | Primer and body coat | Top coat, kitchen screeds | Fast top coat, garages |
Which one you need
- Home garage: epoxy base, flake, polyaspartic or PU top coat. See garage floors.
- Sunny room or conservatory: a UV-stable top coat over whatever's under it.
- Warehouse: high-build epoxy. See industrial floors.
- Commercial kitchen: polyurethane cement. See kitchen floors.
- Fast turnaround: polyaspartic, or a fast-cure system.
What resin flooring isn't
Resin-bound driveways are stone held in clear resin, laid outside. Microcement is a thin cement coat trowelled on, not a resin. Epoxy worktops, countertops and resin art use similar resins in a very different way: epoxyresin.ie covers those. This site is about floors laid inside, on concrete.
What resin flooring costs
| Job | Typical price | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Epoxy flooring, most jobs | €30 to €120 a m² | The system, the state of the slab, the finish and the size of the floor. |
| Roller coat, solid colour (two coats) | €30 to €50 a m² | A thinner coating on a sound slab. Fine for a home garage or a store room. |
| Full system: grind, primer, body coat, top coat | €50 to €120 a m² | Thicker build, diamond-ground prep, repairs and a hard-wearing top coat. |
| Flake or metallic finish | €60 to €100 a m² | The decorative layer and the clear coats over it. |
| Industrial, heavy-duty systems | €50 to €100 a m² | Forklifts, chemicals, line marking and how much of the site stays open. |
| Anti-slip finishes | €20 to €120 a m² | From a grit in the top coat to a trowelled, textured system. |

Questions people ask
Is resin flooring the same as epoxy?
Epoxy is one kind of resin floor. Polyurethane and polyaspartic are the others in common use.
Which resin flooring is the most durable?
It depends on what attacks it: epoxy for abrasion and chemicals, polyurethane cement for heat and thermal shock, PU and polyaspartic top coats for sunlight.
How much does resin flooring cost?
Epoxy systems run €30 to €120 a m². Decorative finishes are €60 to €100 a m².
Can resin flooring go in a house?
Yes: kitchens, living spaces, basements, utility rooms and garages. Use a UV-stable top coat where the sun hits it.
