Epoxy flooring over underfloor heating

Epoxy and resin floors work well over underfloor heating: the layer is a few millimetres thick, so it barely slows the heat. The screed or slab must be fully dried and the heating commissioned before the resin goes down, and most systems ask for the heating off while it's laid and cures.

Free, no obligation. One local installer prices it, not five.

A thin layer over the heat

Carpet and timber insulate the floor from the pipes. A resin floor of 0.3 to 3 mm sits straight on the screed, so the room warms quicker on the same water temperature. That suits a heat pump running low and steady.

The European standard for underfloor heating (EN 1264) caps the floor surface at 29°C in the parts of a room people stand in, well within what resin floors take.

In the right order

  1. The screed is laid over the pipes and left to dry.
  2. The heating is commissioned: brought up slowly to drive out the moisture, then back down.
  3. The screed is tested for moisture.
  4. The heating is turned off before the resin goes down, and stays off while it cures.
  5. It's brought back up a few degrees a day.

Skip the commissioning and the moisture comes out under the resin later. That's when coatings blister.

Which finish works

All of them. Metallic and self-levelling floors are common in open-plan rooms over heating. A UV-stable top coat matters more than the heating does where there's sun.

A photo that works

  • Daylight, or every light on.
  • From the doorway, so most of the floor is in the shot.
  • Cars, bikes and boxes can stay where they are.
  • Hold the phone at chest height, level, not pointed at your feet.

Questions people ask

Can you put epoxy flooring over underfloor heating?

Yes. It's thin, so the heat comes through well. The screed must be dry and the heating off while it's laid and cures.

Will the heat damage the epoxy?

No. Underfloor heating keeps the floor surface at or below 29°C in occupied areas, well within what resin floors take.

Do I turn the heating off to lay it?

Most systems ask for it off before laying and during the cure, then brought back up slowly.

Is resin better than tiles over underfloor heating?

Both pass the heat well. Resin has no grout lines and is quicker to lay on a dry screed.
