Metallic epoxy flooring
A metallic epoxy floor is a clear or tinted resin with metallic pigments, poured and worked by hand so the colours swirl and catch the light. It costs €60 to €100 a m², like other decorative finishes, and no two floors look the same.
Free, no obligation. One local installer prices it, not five.
What makes it metallic
Pearlescent pigments in the resin move as it's laid. The installer pushes them with rollers, trowels and sometimes a blower or solvent spray to make veins, clouds or a marble look. The pattern is set by hand, so a sample board shows the colours and the floor shows the hand.
Poured resin tables use the same pigments, but that's furniture, not flooring: see epoxyresintable.ie for those.
Where it suits
- Living spaces, kitchens and basements in homes.
- Showrooms, salons, bars and shops where the floor is part of the look.
- Show garages and home gyms, with a harder top coat.
It's a gloss floor. It shows scratches, dust and footprints more than flake, and it's slippery when wet unless the top coat has grit.
How it's laid
- The slab is ground and repaired, and primed.
- A base coat, usually black or a dark colour, so the metallic layer has depth.
- The metallic layer, poured and worked while it's wet.
- A clear top coat. A polyurethane or polyaspartic top coat keeps the colour in sunlight.
It's a two to four day job on site, then the cure. Ask to see the installer's own metallic floors, in photos and ideally in person.

Questions people ask
Does metallic epoxy scratch?
Like any gloss floor, it shows fine scratches. Felt pads, a doormat and a harder top coat help. The top coat can be sanded and recoated.
Does it yellow?
Epoxy can yellow in strong sunlight. A UV-stable polyurethane or polyaspartic top coat stops that.
Can I pick the pattern?
The colours, yes, from samples. The exact pattern is made by hand on the day.
Is it slippery?
When wet, yes, unless a fine grit goes in the top coat.
