Anti-slip flooring
A resin floor is made anti-slip by scattering a fine grit, such as quartz sand or aluminium oxide, into the last coat. The Health and Safety Authority advises specifying a wet pendulum test value (PTV) of 36 or more. Anti-slip resin finishes run €20 to €120 a m².
Free, no obligation. One local installer prices it, not five.
What a slip value means
| Wet pendulum value (PTV) | Chance of a slip, walking straight on the level |
|---|---|
| 20 | 1 in 2 |
| 24 | 1 in 20 |
| 27 | 1 in 200 |
| 36 | 1 in 1 million |
The pendulum test copies a heel striking the floor, and people slip on wet floors, so the wet value is the one to ask for. Ramps, stairs and turning areas need more. The figures are the Health and Safety Authority's. Ramp tests (DIN 51130, giving the R9 to R13 ratings) are read differently: compare like with like.
How a floor gets its grip
- Fine grit in the top coat: barely visible, for homes, shops and dry-ish floors.
- Coarser grit broadcast into the body coat and sealed: wet production floors, ramps, kitchens.
- Textured screeds: the heaviest grip, for the wettest and greasiest floors.
More grip is harder to clean. Pick the least texture that's safe for the floor.
Where you need it
Commercial kitchens, wash-down areas, food production, entrances, ramps, loading bays, changing rooms, around pools, and garages where cars bring rain in. Regulation 9 of the General Application Regulations says workplace floors should not be slippery.

Questions people ask
What makes an epoxy floor anti-slip?
Grit, such as quartz sand or aluminium oxide, scattered into or mixed with the top coat.
What slip rating do I need?
The Health and Safety Authority advises a wet pendulum value of 36 or more for floors that may get wet.
Is anti-slip flooring hard to clean?
A little harder than smooth. A deck scrubber or a stiff brush and a mop deals with it.
Can an existing epoxy floor be made anti-slip?
Yes: it's sanded and given a new top coat with grit.
